What Is The Vitiligo Diet?

What is the Vitiligo diet? That´s a great question! You´re likely bombarded with information about new diets every day, and this might sound like yet another fad to come and go. The Vitiligo diet, however, was designed for a very specific purpose: to cure people, once and for all, of their skin disease. If you´re reading this and are not exactly sure what Vitiligo is, a short explanation may help:

Vitiligo is a skin disease which causes parts of the skin to lose their natural color. You may have seen this in the form of white patches on the face; the parts most commonly affected include the hands, feet, face, arms, and lips. Where does Vitiligo come from? One theory is that the immune system unexpectedly begins attacking various areas of the body. Another theory is that melanocytes, which are responsible for creating pigment in the skin, begin attacking themselves. About one in every 200 people in the US and Europe develop Vitiligo, and approximately 20 percent of Vitiligo patients develop auto-immune thyroid disease.[1] Although there are many revealing statistics about Vitiligo, we want to concentrate on treating it.


What to Avoid

As we’ve all heard at one time or another, you are what you eat; this is an important aspect of the Vitiligo diet. As Vitiligo is a disease which starts from within, it is important to concentrate on treating it from the inside. The food we ingest has multiple functions within our bodies, and certain products can have very negative effects while others can have very positive effects. Some commonly known “bad foods” are fizzy drinks, alcohol, processed/tinned food, and of course, products containing a large amount of Trans fats i.e. fast food. These are things we know are bad for our bodies, yet they are consumed regularly. Rates of acne, diabetes, and Vitiligo have all risen with the incorporation of these unhealthy eating habits, and Vitiligo has been directly linked to a toxic buildup in the body.[2] Here are some of the foods that Vitiligo patients should specifically avoid:

The Vitiligo Diet Triggers-Gluten: Even if you have a slight gluten sensitivity or intolerance, this can have a negative effect on the skin.[3]

-Acidic or sour foods, as these can substantially affect the Ph balance in the body.[4]

-Sugary foods: They alter glucose levels, which in turn, negatively affects the skin.

-Non-vegetarian foods, except for fish (especially salmon, mackerel, and fresh tuna).

-Spicy foods

-Foods high in saturated fatty acids, such as processed meats, butter, full-fat dairy products, and pastries.

-Blueberries, as they contain a substance which inhibits pigment production.

That might sound like a lot, but several of these products should be avoided or reduced by anyone looking to live a healthier lifestyle. On the positive side, you´ll have more room for healthy ingredients, some of which you may have never tried before!



What to Include

Here is an overview of some foods which should be incorporated into every Vitiligo patient’s diet:

-Legumes: This includes but is not limited to chickpeas, beans, and lentils.

-Omega 3 Fatty acids, which are known to boost immunity and decrease inflammation throughout the body.[5]

-Proteins, especially from vegetables, since you want to avoid non-vegetarian products as much as possible. This could include soya beans, tofu, and quinoa.

-Healthy oils and fats, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados.

-Vegetables, as with any good diet, should be included. This specifically pertains to cabbage, carrots, beetroots, spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and leafy greens.

-Fruits, another staple of any good diet, are strongly suggested. Some particularly healthy fruits for Vitiligo patients are black dates, apricots, peaches, bananas, mangoes, and apples.

-Grains, such as porridge and other non-refined wheat products, i.e. brown bread and pasta.

-Nuts, for their overall benefits, and for the fact they are a good source of healthy fats and high in Vitamin E.

-Fluids and water, which once again is important for any living, breathing human-being, and even more so for Vitiligo patients.

-Vitiligo patients should consciously try to incorporate as many antioxidants as possible into their diets, as they disable free radicals and can have very positive effects on the skin.[6]


Don´t forget about vitamins

The last point we’ll touch on in the Vitiligo diet is vitamins. Many of us are deficient in some area or another, and it’s not always possible to consume the nutrients and trace elements our bodies need through food alone. For Vitiligo patients, this may be especially true, if the loss of pigmentation is due to a lack of certain substances. Certain vitamins, which have been utilized in the past as natural cures for Vitiligo are folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and ascorbic acid. In conclusion, the Vitiligo diet consists of cutting out some commonly known empty foods and stocking up on what’s good for your body, inside and out.
